Production Tips

Productions Tips

When you record a song always save every chance you can so that in case a crash occurs you will not lose your session. I have fallen victim to this and have learned to save no matter if the DAW system I am using does autosave. Once you are finished with your recording of audio always consolidate your audio this will help you in the end. It helps you in case your session file gets corrupted, import to a different DAW system and delete the unused audio files.

Following these tips will save you hard drive space and keep everything organized for the next person. Here is a quick must do list when you are recording people or production.

  1. Name each and every track, if you are going to have someone mix your song how are they to know what track is what.
  2. Make sure you listen to all your audio carefully. What do I mean by this you may ask? Sometime you may hear things that you are able to edit out of the track.
  3. Delete/Edit any dead air in a track. Meaning any dead space from the start, middle and end of every track. (I will work on a video to show people my process.)
  4. Once all your audio is completely edited then consolidate your audio.
  5. Ok, you save did everything now you done right? No create a word or note pad document of the session with the following info. BPM of your song, how many tracks, and any notes that the other person may need to know. These are just basic things that an audio engineer needs to know if he needs to import your song into a different DAW system.

I know it is a lot to do but remember we want to become producers and producers are professional about their work. Take pride in your set up and make it easy for others as well. I cannot tell you how many people I know very well that still don’t do this process and I have to ask them to redo it which wastes their time because they know how I work. They work in different DAW systems but want me to mix their music with my DAW system because of the plugins I use.
